Federal shutdown won't stop Social Security disability payments

As the federal government shutdown continues, it is still a hot topic of discussion in every corner of the country. Even though it may seem at times that the day-to-day decisions made in Washington don't impact many people, there are many Tennessee residents who are concerned about the short- and long-term effects of the ongoing congressional gridlock. Those who benefit from the Social Security disability insurance program should know, however, that benefit payments will still be made, no matter how long the shutdown lasts.

Even though SSDI payments will still be administered, a number of locally based services are impacted. Disability Scoop reports that local Social Security Administration offices will keep their doors open for the duration of the shutdown, but some services will be unavailable.

Certainly, this is welcome news for those already receiving SSDI benefits. At the same time, however, many people who are in the process of applying for assistance might wonder how their claims will be impacted. Existing delays in benefit approval or appeals may only be exacerbated by the shutdown, as most federal agencies operate with limited staffing levels.

Handling issues related to SSDI claims is already a complex process, and the ongoing shutdown only adds confusion into the mix. In order to gain some clarity into the situation, it may be helpful to consult with an experienced attorney. Taking time to do this could minimize frustrations associated with disability benefit claims.

As news regarding the shutdown continues to unfold, those who may be impacted by the interruption of disability-related services may want to stay tuned.
