Studies link depression to brain injuries in children and adults

A person's life can change in a matter of moments. Suffering a serious injury can put many aspects of life on hold -- sometimes permanently. Namely, certain medical conditions can make it possible to work full time, which is one reason why Social Security disability insurance is available to provide financial support to those with a life-altering illness or injury.

The impacts of head and brain injuries can be particularly dramatic. Diminished cognitive or motor functions can make it difficult to complete even simple tasks. In fact, a common injury, such as a concussion, can cause memory loss. As such, there has been a lot of attention placed on the wide array of effects of traumatic brain injuries.

Many studies have linked brain injuries to depression in adults. In fact, Norwegian medical researchers found that adults are between 13 and 18 percent more likely to develop depression if they have a brain injury. This means that something that first manifested as a physical injury can lead to a mental illness, which only adds to person’s health concerns.

A group of researchers at Brown University wanted to take a different look at this established medical link by examining the effects of traumatic brain injuries on children. Their study found that children, much like adults, are at a higher risk of depression after suffering a brain injury.

Having knowledge of all the potential side effects of an injury can be beneficial. This way, a person can seek out all of the necessary care and support they deserve.
