NASCAR driver perseveres after multiple sclerosis diagnosis

There are many medical diagnoses that can change a person's life almost overnight. Many autoimmune diseases fall within this category. As these conditions develop, individuals often lose critical motor skills.

Racing fans in Tennessee might be familiar with Trevor Bayne, a NASCAR driver who gained fame by becoming the youngest person to win the Daytona 500 in 2011. Only a couple years later, Bayne is making news for life events off the racetrack. The driver announced that he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which was discovered after he had a flare up this past summer.

While the racer was sidelined for a short time, he made multiple visits to doctors at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic. Recently, Bayne received clearance to drive again and has decided to continue his racing career for the foreseeable future. Bayne is fortunate to have access to some of the best medical care and attention available.

Another sports figure, professional hockey goalie Josh Harding, made headlines when he announced his multiple sclerosis diagnosis. He has since been able to balance his medication intake and is having a successful season so far.

In many cases, multiple sclerosis develops into a debilitating condition. This is exactly why Social Security disability insurance benefits might prove to be helpful. For those with limited financial resources and access to medical care, this can help provide enough stability to focus on treating the symptoms of the condition.

Although multiple sclerosis can develop into a very severe medical condition, it provides hope to know that some people are able to continue to find success in physically demanding professions. At the same time, however, it's also comforting to understand that there are options to pursue financial support if it becomes necessary.
