Treatment, support vital for long-term health after spine injury

Certain types of injuries can change a person's life in an instant. While some injuries have far-reaching effects for a limited period of time, others can have a lifetime of consequences. This is particularly true when a person suffers a spinal cord injury.

In many cases, a person's mobility may be limited with a severe injury to the spinal cord. This can make simple tasks very difficult. As such, a person who is dealing with the medical impacts of this injury may no longer be able to work. If this is the case, then it may be helpful to consider Social Security disability insurance as a financial safety net in order to keep up with basic expenses.

One thing SSDI benefits can do is help ease financial pressure, so people living with severe injuries can seek the medical treatment and rehabilitation they need to stay healthy. The results of a recent study conducted by the World Health Organization suggest that those people with spinal injuries who don't have access to medical attention are more likely to have medical complications that can lead to premature death.

According to the WHO study, it's not necessarily spinal injuries alone that create health problems; rather, it's the associated conditions that develop without proper medical care that lead to additional trouble.

Worldwide, nearly 500,000 people suffer a spinal cord injury every year. Of these cases, about 90 percent are caused by some kind of trauma, such as a car or fall accident. Life can throw many twists and turns, so it may be best to take steps to ease the financial stress and pressure created by an unexpected injury.
