Disabled vets to benefit from expedited SSD application process

When veterans become disabled, they are given the opportunity to apply for disability benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This application process can be lengthy and complicated. However, these benefits often allow vets to more easily pay for the care that they need. Therefore, the sometimes frustrating process of applying for these benefits is often worth the effort.

However, many veterans have been understandably angered by the fact that after spending so much time applying for disability benefits through the VA that they have been expected to undergo just as complex and lengthy a process in order to obtain Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits. If one governmental agency had already ruled that these vets were disabled, why were these warriors being compelled to go through another disability determination process by an additional federal agency?

That compelling question has led the Social Security Administration (SSA) to reform its policies. Starting immediately, the SSA will fast-track applications submitted by veterans who have been declared 100 percent permanently and totally disabled by the VA. As a result of this new policy, vets will be able to receive their SSD benefits in a matter of days or weeks as opposed to months or years.

This policy shift will help enable disabled vets to more quickly obtain their benefits and will cut down on parallel application process time and resources. Hopefully, the time saved by the SSA as a result of this shift will result in reduced waiting time for mainstream SSD applicants as well.
