CDC releases interesting study related to disability

It is no secret that Americans often struggle with living healthy, active lifestyles. The obesity rate across the nation is skyrocketing, in part because many Americans either choose to or are compelled to live a sedentary lifestyle.

Recent research indicates that one population in particular may be in great need of more physical activity. Experts at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have determined that nearly half of all disabled American adults fail to engage in any aerobic physical activity at all. Nearly an additional 25 percent of disabled adults get some aerobic exercise but do not meet minimum physical activity requirements for good health.

This study is somewhat unsurprising, given that many American adults who receive Social Security Disability benefits or are generally classified as disabled are physically incapable of obtaining regular aerobic exercise. However, it does not seem correct that nearly 75 percent of disabled American adults fail to engage in adequate aerobic activity. This is especially true because the director of the CDC recently explained that, “Physical activity is the closest thing we have to a wonder drug,” and many disabled adults could benefit from this wonder drug.

It is important for disabled adults who are capable of engaging in regular aerobic activity to understand that disabled adults who do not exercise remain 50 percent more likely to develop a chronic condition like heart disease, diabetes, cancer or stroke. If you can exercise, please consider doing so regularly. Your future self will almost certainly thank you for doing so.
