SSD benefits are often an option for patients diagnosed with PTSD

Over the past several decades, the medical community and the public in general have come to a more full understanding of post-traumatic stress disorder than the nation had in the first years after the war in Vietnam. Many service members and veterans suffer from this condition as a result of combat. Other individuals develop PTSD in response to sexual trauma, work-related accidents, motor vehicle accidents, violence and a host of other tragic occurrences.

The Social Security Administration recognizes PTSD as an anxiety disorder which qualifies certain sufferers for Social Security Disability benefits. Like many other conditions that qualify individuals for benefits, it is not simply enough to be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. There are other criteria that must be met before you can receive benefits for this condition.

An attorney experienced in applying for Social Security Disability benefits should be able to guide you through the process and help to ensure that your application is complete before it is processed by the Social Security Administration. In addition, your physician will be required to verify certain aspects of your condition.

For example, your physician and/or your attorney must generally document how you react to PTSD anxiety. Without such documentation, the SSA has no way of verifying that your condition makes it difficult or impossible for you to work. A physician must also medically document several other elements of your condition. If you have questions about this criteria and about how to better ensure that your application for SSD benefits is complete, please consult an experienced attorney.
