Veterans seeking medical help beyond the VA system post-scandal

Over the past several weeks, we have written extensively about the scandal currently plaguing the healthcare system run by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The media has also covered this story in great detail. Unquestionably, there are numerous benefits which stem from this kind of widespread media coverage and also from newly intense congressional scrutiny of the VA. However, one potential drawback of the pervasive coverage of this scandal is that many veterans are now seeking medical treatment in healthcare systems beyond those run by the VA.

According to Fox News, many vets are turning to the American Legion for help. As many of our readers may already be aware, the American Legion is a nonprofit veterans organization. While it is wonderful that the Legion supports veterans in a number of valuable ways, it is not the duty of nonprofit organizations to care for our nation’s veterans. The VA may be currently overrun with scandal but that doesn’t mean that vets should feel that they are unable to turn to the VA healthcare system for their ongoing medical needs.

Many veterans are understandably angered, frustrated and even scared about what the VA scandal will mean for their healthcare moving forward. It is imperative that the VA redeems itself as quickly as possible so that our nation’s veterans do not feel the need to seek healthcare from nonprofit organizations.

If you are a veteran and are concerned because you have not been able to gain access to the treatment you need through the VA system, please consider speaking with an attorney experienced in issues affecting veterans. There may be options available to you in the wake of the scandal that you are not yet aware of.
