Will your SSD benefits lapse at some point?

We frequently write about the benefits associated with applying for Social Security Disability. For many Americans, these benefits can mean the difference between being able to afford necessary medical care and going without. We also frequently discuss the fact that qualifying for Social Security Disability benefits can be a trying process. Once recipients are finally approved to receive SSD, the relief they feel is often palpable.

However, SSD benefits are only meant to last up to a certain point. Individuals who qualify for SSD benefits must generally have a debilitating medical condition which renders them unable to work for at least one year. If your qualifying medical condition improves to the point where you can work again, your benefits may either reduce or lapse, depending on how much income you are taking in and whether you can safely resume regular, full-time or substantial part-time work.

In addition, it is important to understand that you cannot receive SSD benefits once you reach full retirement age. At that point, your SSD benefits will convert into Social Security retirement benefits automatically. Your benefits amount should not reduce at this point.

If you have any concerns about how a transition back to work or reaching full retirement age may affect your Social Security Disability benefits, please do not hesitate to reach out to an attorney experienced in this area of law. He or she should be able to answer your questions and guide you through any legal options you may wish to pursue given your unique circumstances.
