What are the income reporting requirements for SSD recipients?

If you receive Social Security Disability benefits, you already understand how complex the application process is for this particular government subsidy. You understand that the Social Security Administration requires a wealth of information about your financial status and your medical conditions before it will grant you SSD benefits. It is important to understand however, that the complex nature of reporting your financial and medical status does not end once you are deemed to meet the Social Security Disability benefits qualifications set by the SSA.

Once you become a SSD beneficiary, you must ensure that you report changes in your financial condition and medical condition to the SSA. Failure to adhere to the SSA's income reporting requirements could lead to a reduction in benefits, elimination of your benefits and even fraud charges in some extreme cases. If you have questions about the SSA's income and medical reporting requirements, please speak to your attorney.

In general, you must generally report any increase in work-based earnings you receive to the SSA if you currently receive SSD benefits. You must also generally report any changes in your work-activity to the SSA, especially if you have increased your work hours, although it is important to report decreases in work hours as well. You may generally only continue to receive SSD benefits if you are unable to work to any meaningful extent.

You must also report any public disability benefits or workers' compensation benefits you receive to the SSA as well. Your attorney can help you determine how these "competing" benefits may impact each other and your overall budget.
