Understanding the basics of Supplemental Security Income

We frequently write about the Social Security Disability benefits entitlement program. Recipients of this entitlement are often grateful for the financial benefits it provides, especially because SSD recipients are not in a position to work full-time. However, not everyone who is disabled qualifies for SSD benefits. In order to be considered for this entitlement, applicants generally must have developed a work history and earned credits towards qualification for SSD income.

Thankfully, another entitlement program managed by the Social Security Administration can aid those who may not qualify for SSD benefits. The Supplemental Security Income program even helps disabled children, as it does not require applicants to have developed a work history.

In order to qualify for SSI benefits, one must generally be disabled or must be over the age of 64. In addition, recipients cannot generally have more than $2,000 or $3,000 in assets, however numerous exceptions to this asset restriction rule may apply in your particular situation. It is worth noting that SSI recipients are also generally qualified to receive Medicaid benefits. Therefore, applying for these benefits may also inspire you to seek out the health care coverage you need through the Medicaid program as well.

These few notes only comprise a broad overview of the SSI program and the benefits it has to offer. If you are elderly, disabled or are the parent of a disabled child and you have limited financial means, please consider speaking with an attorney about whether or not applying for SSI benefits makes sense for you.
