Which mental disorders could be eligible for SSDI?

Being unable to work due to a disability can be devastating. Not only is a person struggling with a serious health condition, but he or she can also be extremely nervous about how to pay for living expenses and medical care without a paycheck.

Many people in this position have the option of pursuing Social Security disability benefits in Tennessee. Unfortunately, there are some folks who may not think their condition qualifies as a disabling condition and do not explore their options. They think that unless a disability is visible or physical, it will not be covered. But that is untrue; in this post, we will look at some of the mental disorders that generally meet the criteria for benefits.

The mental conditions that may be considered disabled are separated into different categories. Each category has a distinct definition and requirements set by the Social Security Administration in  order to qualify as disabling. The nine different categories are:

  • Organic mental disorders (those stemming from brain dysfunction)
  • Psychotic disorders
  • Affective disorders (including manic depression and mood disorders)
  • Intellectual disabilities
  • Disorders related to anxiety
  • Somatoform disorders (those with physical symptoms but no organic causes)
  • Personality disorders
  • Substance addiction (that affects the central nervous system)
  • Pervasive developmental conditions including austism

People who are suffering from any one of these conditions should know that they could be eligible for SSDI benefits. As we mentioned above, however, there are strict requirements that must be met for a person's application for these benefits to be successful.

In addition to medical records, applicants will need to show that the condition is functionally limiting and is severe enough to prevent a person from working. There can be considerable documentation to gather, and a person may be required to undergo testing and have their condition assessed by the SSA to determine function limitations.

While this may seem very overwhelming, it is important to remember that people suffering with a mental disorder do not have to go through this process alone. An attorney can help a person and his or her family understand what needs to happen when filing an application or an appeal, while also providing critical guidance and support.
