What Social Security benefits can Tennessee veterans receive?

Military service members put their lives on the line for the safety of their fellow Americans. Although a number of service members return safely from wars, there are others who come back to their respective homes suffering from war-related injuries or illnesses who often need long-term medical care. Tennessee veterans, however, should not be disheartened. The Social Security Administration has benefit programs available for veterans after they complete their tour of duty.

What benefits are available for veterans? The Social Security Administration offers two types of benefits. One is Social Security Disability benefits and the other is the Supplemental Security Income program. How is disability defined by the SSA? Disability means that person can no longer work due to their medical condition. The medical condition should have continued for a year or must be expected to last a year or result in death.

Are veterans' families entitled to receive benefits? Yes. A spouse who is aged 62 years or older can receive benefits. A younger spouse who cares for a disabled child or a child younger than 16-years-old is also eligible for benefits. Adopted children and grandchildren can also receive benefits under certain circumstances. Can a veteran receive benefits despite being on active duty? Yes. However, it is important to inform the SSA if a veteran's particular specialty code changes. Also, work status can affect benefits.

How long will it take to receive benefits? The duration of obtaining the benefits will depend on the disability, how fast medical evidence is provided and if a medical examination is needed. Tennessee service members would be doing themselves a favor by getting more information about obtaining veterans' benefits.
