Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System disability benefits

Many Tennessee residents are unable to seek gainful employment or go back to work due to various injuries suffered while working. Federal authorities may help by providing Social Security Disability benefits for injuries if the disabled claimant qualifies for disability benefits. State authorities can provide help through the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System, or TCRS.

Disabilities suffered by a claimant must be proven by a review of medical records and other evidence provided to the Social Security Administration. Many claimants find it beneficial to get more information in order to help in collecting and submitting the required documentation. Many disabilities that meet the qualifications for Social Security Disability benefits are broadly classified into three categories by the TCRS: ordinary disability, inactive disability and accidental disability.

Much like Social Security disability benefits for injuries, to qualify for ordinary disability the disability claimant must prove that he or she had at least five years of gainful employment. Employment records may be supplied to the TCNR in order to claim benefits for ordinary disabilities. If the claimant suffers a workplace injury that renders him or her incapable of seeking gaining employment, accidental injuries may be claimed. In this case, the claimant must make application within a year of the injury.

Inactive disability benefits are mostly claimed by retired employees. Similar to ordinary disability benefits, an inactive claimant must have at least five years of gainful employment. However, the claimant does not need to currently be employed when the application for TCNR benefits is filed. State authorities may determine compensation after evaluating the average salary that the claimant was earning at the time of disability or at the time of retirement.
