Supplemental Security Income punished for improper spending

As Tennessee residents are aware, Supplemental Security Income is a federally funded program designed to help people with disabilities who cannot work, or for those people who are unable to work because of their advanced age. Funding for SSI benefits is usually taken from the taxes from people's Social Security contributions.

Recently, it was reported in the media that authorities noticed some unscrupulous spending by the Social Security Administration, which is in charge of disbursements of Supplemental Security Income benefits. The office in charge of government accountability looked into the matter and found that approximately 5 billion dollars were spent from the Supplemental Security Income fund in error.

Many of the irregular payments made as Supplemental Security Income were attributed to the fact that the claimants did not regularly report their income. In some cases, the incomes that were reported were inaccurate. The authorities also claimed that no fraudulent activity occurred in the department. The irregular payments were still in the minority and were mostly due to oversight problems. Congress encouraged the department in charge of the Supplemental Security Income to be more vigilant and check the changes in the Supplemental Security Income claimant's situation regularly.

It should be noted that improper payments for Supplemental Security Income could ultimately end up depriving the people who actually need the Supplemental Security Income.

The people who are in need of Supplemental Security Income may wish to consider contacting an attorney in order to understand the most effective way to obtain benefits and to protect their rights.
