Alternative method to benefit disabled workers

Workers in Tennessee may find it valuable to learn about an alternative Social Security Disability plan that will improve their benefits. The existing Social Security program is struggling with debt that exceeds $13.4 trillion. The current program also works in a complicated way, and the governing bodies that are involved in the disbursement of disability benefits are not financially stable.

The alternative method, called the Alternate Plan, was first adopted in Texas, and it aimed at creating a personally owned retirement program that would cover all aspects of Social Security benefits in a more effective way.

Under this plan, the workers are eligible to receive the disability benefits immediately after an accident or injury. There is no minimum working time required. Whereas, under the Social Security disability benefits plan, the worker needs to work for at least five years in order to become eligible for the benefits and that worker must be at least 30-years-old.

According to the Government Accounting Office, workers under the Alternate Plan receive almost twice the compensation of those under the SSDI plan. Workers whose wages are high are found to receive more than twice the compensation than those under the SSDI.

The Alternate Plan's disability benefits are based on the worker's salary. Thus, under that plan, the workers receive 66 to 88 percent of their monthly salary as benefits. The maximum amount that a person can receive increases to $8,000 per month. Whereas under SSDI, people receive less than $1,700 monthly and the maximum that they can receive is $2,800.

The verification of claims under the Alternate Plan is conducted by private sector companies in order to ensure that the person making the claim is actually disabled and unable to return to work. That helps to reduce fraudulent claims.

If a worker who is covered under the alternate plan dies, the family is paid a maximum of $215,000 as benefits compared with the $255 paid as death benefits under SSDI.
