SSDI benefit recipients must report all income changes

Being able to stay in their homes with enough to eat and the ability to pay utilities and other basic expenses is important to most Americans, especially those who are disabled. Tennessee residents who receive Social Security Disability Insurance benefits should know that they must report all changes to their financial situation to the Social Security Administration. Any failure to report changes can result in loss of benefits and, in some cases, charges of fraud.

Someone who has additional income apart from SSDI benefits and is also working and has his or her hours changed must report these changes to the SSA. In addition, the recipient must reports any and all additional public, workers' or social welfare benefits with SSA authorities. This is important because a person's income from SSDI and other benefit cannot be more than 80 percent of what he or she earned while working. An earlier blog post covers this issue in detail.

Generally, federal income taxes are not withheld from SSD benefits. However, other sources of income may require the payment of federal income taxes. Although individuals who earn less than $25,000, and couples who earn less than $32,000 are generally exempt from federal income taxes, federal tax rules change year to year, so it is advisable to consult an attorney who has a thorough understanding of all relevant tax laws. An attorney may also help be able to explain any potential complications when it comes to applying for SSDI benefits.

The attorneys at Dale Buchanan and Associates are highly experienced in handling SSDI claims. They can provide effective counsel to clients whose benefit requests have been denied or who face other problems in getting their claims approved in a timely manner. Every initial consultation is free.
