Reasons behind disability claim rejections -- Part I

Tennessee residents who make a claim for Social Security disability benefits should not be surprised if their claims are initially rejected. A recent study found that only one-third of claims filed last year were approved by the Social Security Administration. To avoid rejection, an Social Security Disability Insurance claim must conform to all rules and regulations to ensure it is not turned down. Here are some common reasons why an SSDI benefits claim may be turned down.

One reason for rejection is that the work credits accumulated by the employee requesting benefits are not enough to qualify for benefits. These credits are calculated by the SSA, using the time the claimant was employed before being disabled. The rule of thumb is that the more time a claimant worked prior to the disability, the better the odds for approval.

Another reason that could cause an SSDI benefits claim to be denied is that the claimant's earnings exceed the specified limits for benefits. Monthly income is verified by the SSA before sanctioning SSD benefits. The current parameters for qualification for disability benefits are monthly earnings less than $1,090 or less than $1,820 a month if the claimant is blind.

A disability claim may also be rejected because the medical condition listed is not considered a disability by the SSA. The ailment suffered must have a duration of at least 12 months or be life-threatening to be considered. This does not necessarily mean that a claimant is disqualified from receiving benefits if a condition is not severe; it means that more details of the condition may need to be provided to the SSA for claim evaluation.

Finally, the SSA may determine that a claimant is capable of doing other forms of work, which may not be similar to the prior job, but will provide income. The claimant's ability to work will be evaluated by an examiner who will then decide if the claim holds up. The good news is that an applicant does have the ability to convince the examiner of the person's inability to work at the time of application.
