Social Security disability is an earned benefit for many

Social Security disability benefits are a vital resource for disabled individuals who have worked for their benefits. October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. It is important to keep in mind now and always that Social Security disability (SSD) benefits are earned benefits for disabled workers. There is sometimes a false impression that recipients of SSD benefits are not receiving an earned benefit, have not worked for the benefits and may only have minor physical impairments or medical conditions.

On the contrary, SSD benefits require sufficient work history to be eligible to claim benefits. In addition, the applicant's medical condition must be expected to last at least one year or result in death and prevent the applicant from performing any substantial work. Certain medical conditions may fall on the Social Security's list of medical conditions that may receive expedited processing. As a result, disabled individuals who receive Social Security disability benefits are severely disabled and reliant on the Social Security disability benefits they receive.

Disabled individuals may face a number of different challenges following their disability. One challenge does not have to be applying for and securing badly needed disability benefits. Understanding how to qualify for benefits and fulfill the application process can help disabled individuals more swiftly navigate the process to secure SSD benefits.

Disabled individuals may also need to be familiar with the appeals process for SSD benefits. Whatever issues arise during the process of applying for benefits, knowledge of the process can be helpful for disabled individuals seeking the SSD benefits they have earned.
