Tennessee veteran obtains long-awaited benefits

A Tennessee veteran who gave a great service to our country in the Vietnam War has struggled for years to obtain much-needed disability benefits. Thankfully, recently, he has finally obtained the veterans disability benefits owed him after years of mistakes and denials.

Following his heroic service in Vietnam, for which he received more than one Bronze Star, this veteran began experiencing nightmares, which he still experiences today, as well as sleep paralysis and neuropathy in his legs from a foot wound infection. He filed a claim for benefits over thirty years ago on the basis of mental health symptoms, but was denied because his mental health symptoms were not formally diagnosed. He appealed his claim, but still received no disability payments due to the categorization of his sleep paralysis as a seizure disorder, and therefore a neurological condition, not a psychological condition, and he had normal neurological tests. Later, he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, for which he was again denied benefits by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Eventually, the deserving veteran obtained help and began receiving partial disability payments for both PTSD and neuropathy. It was not until the veteran could establish that a mistake had been made in the denial of benefits for PTSD that he began receiving the full amount of benefits he deserved, as well as back pay for the benefits he was owed following the denial for PTSD benefits.

If you or a loved one is having difficulties obtaining veterans benefits, you may wish to seek out legal counsel. An initial denial does not mean the end of the road, as it still may be possible for a veteran to obtain the benefits he or she deserves for war-related injuries.
