Tennessee veterans may pursue disability benefits

Veterans Day earlier this month called attention to the valiant and brave service of the many thousands of service members who sacrificed their time, and sometimes their health, to serve the United States. For veterans in Tennessee who emerge from military service with medical needs, whether due to a brain injury, mental illness or other medical condition, it is essential for their well-being that they obtain medical help. Fortunately, there may be veterans benefits available that can help those men and women with long-term medical care needs.

U.S. Armed Forces veterans may have access to disability benefits, administered through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Those veterans who have a disability may qualify for certain monthly disability benefits. The benefits can range from $127 to more than $3,000 per month. There may be additional compensation available for veterans who have lost a limb, have suffered a very severe disability or if a veteran's spouse is also seriously disabled.

Significantly, the VA will determine whether a veteran's particular service-related disability will qualify him or her for benefits. The veteran's disability rating must be equal to or greater than 10 percent. The application process requires submission of a veteran's discharge of separation papers, medical evidence of the relevant disability, as well as Service Treatment Records documenting the connection between a person's disability and military service.

If you or a loved one is a United States veteran and believe you may be eligible to seek veterans benefits, it may be helpful to seek legal advice from an attorney knowledgeable about veteran's issues to aid you in the process of applying for benefits.
