Can I receive SSD benefits for my work-related burn injury?

There are many ways that a Tennessee resident might become injured on the job. One particularly frightening work-related ailment is a burn injury.

Burn injuries may happen in any number of fields, but may be more common for those workers who are exposed to chemicals and other hazardous materials on the job. Workers who have suffered a work accident leading to a burn injury may be eligible to receive Social Security Disability benefits for injury.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) evaluates burn injuries by assessing the predominant feature of a person's impairment. Though the SSA classifies burn injuries under skin disorders, often burn injuries will affect more than simply a person's skin. Therefore, whether a burn injury is chemical, electrical or thermal in nature, the SSA will consider how exactly a burn affects a victim in making its determination regarding benefits.

For a person whose predominant affliction following a burn is skin lesions, the SSA may award disability benefits if the skin lesions are either expected to last for at least a 12 month period or have already lasted that long. Some burn victims may have injuries that have a greater impact on their cardiovascular, musculoskeletal or respiratory systems. Others may suffer from impacts on their neurological, mental or speech and senses abilities and consequently, the SSA will make a disability determination by evaluating a person's injuries under the requirements for the relevant system.

Workers who have suffered work-related injuries, such as a burn injury, may wish to pursue Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. Accident injuries can be devastating for a worker and his or her family, but the help that SSDI benefits can provide can prove invaluable.
