Tennesseans with liver disease may qualify for SSDI benefits

Liver disease is a serious condition with which many Tennesseans have to contend. It can cause major health repercussions, as well as regular pain and suffering for someone afflicted with the disease. For those persons whom the Social Security Administration determines have chronic liver disease, there may be some help in the form of Social Security Disability Insurance benefits.

The SSA classifies liver disease as a disorder of the digestive system. For those with chronic liver disease, the SSA has clearly defined parameters through which it determines whether a person qualifies for SSD benefits. Significantly, however, even if a person's liver disease does not meet the federal requirements, an individual may still qualify for benefits if he or she has an impairment that qualifies for benefits under another body system listing.

The SSA has seven potential classifications for those persons suffering from chronic liver disease. An individual with end stage liver disease who has high SSA Chronic Liver Disease scores may qualify for disability benefits starting as of the date of his or her first score. Additionally, a person suffering from chronic liver disease who exhibits hemorrhaging from his or her gastric, esophageal or ectopic varices may qualify for SSDI benefits. A chronic liver disease sufferer who also experiences spontaneous bacterial peritonitis with peritoneal fluid may also qualify to receive SSD benefits.

Those persons with liver conditions who are fortunate enough to receive a liver transplant may also be able to receive SSDI benefits. The SSA considers liver transplant recipients to be under a disability for the year following their transplant, and may be deemed to be disabled for longer depending on their level of impairment.

If you or a loved one has liver disease and is in need of SSDI benefits, you may benefit from discussing available options with an attorney.
