Blood diseases may qualify one for SSD benefits

Hematological disorders affect the health of a person's blood. As we all rely on our blood for survival, a disease that attacks a person's blood can have severe consequences for a Tennessean. The good news is that a person suffering from a blood disease may qualify for Social Security disability benefits for illness due to their condition.

The Social Security Administration specifically evaluates two primary types of hematological disorders. They focus their analysis based on a determination of whether a person's specific disorder is cancerous, also known as malignant, or non-cancerous, known as non-malignant.

Examples of malignant hematological disorders include leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Myeloma cancer affects a person's plasma cells, which create antibodies that help fight disease and infections. Examples of non-malignant hematological disorders that may qualify a person for receipt of SSD benefits include thrombosis or hemostasis, hemolytic anemias, and bone marrow failure disorders. These non-cancerous disorders interfere with the functioning and development of a person's red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and clotting-factor proteins.

To determine whether a Tennessean with a blood disease will qualify for SSD benefits, the SSA will require extensive medical documentation, including a laboratory report or physician's report of a person's condition. Furthermore, the SSA will conduct additional analysis that will vary depending on a person's specific ailment, as each blood disease attacks the body differently and, therefore, needs to be evaluated with these differences in mind.

A disability can wreak havoc on an individual's personal and professional lives, rendering it difficult to make ends meet. If you or a loved one has a blood disease and believe such condition may allow for receipt of Social Security disability benefits for illness, you may find that an attorney can provide valuable assistance as you navigate the SSA's application requirements.
