Disability benefits available for injured Tennessee veterans

Tennessee veterans who have been injured during their service to our country are entitled to certain benefits. One of the benefits which injured veterans may be able to receive is veterans disability benefits.

In order to receive these benefits, a veteran must be deemed at least 10 percent disabled due to a disease or injury that either occurred or was aggravated during his or her military service. "Service" encompasses active duty, active duty for training, and inactive duty training. To receive benefits, a servicemember must not have been dishonorably discharged.

A veteran may receive Social Security disability benefits due to a wide variety of injuries, including physical conditions or mental illnesses, such as post-traumatic stress disorder. The amount of compensation that a veteran can receive in monthly benefits will depend on his or her level of disability. The Social Security Administration determines this based on an evaluation of a person's disability level, with the lowest possible level being 10 percent disabled up to 100 percent disabled.

Additionally, a veteran may be able to receive compensation for disabilities that have arisen after his or her service, if such disability is presumed to be related to his or her military service. Also, benefits may be available for disabilities suffered during military service.

These tax-free benefits can provide tremendous assistance to injured veterans, but it can be somewhat difficult to obtain them. A veteran must provide sufficient medical evidence of his or her disability, as well as medical documentation that connects the individual's disability to an event or injury that occurred during his or her military service. An injured veteran may wish to consult with an attorney for help as he or she tackles the process of applying for benefits.
