SSDI benefits and the inability to ambulate effectively

Residents of Chattanooga and throughout Tennessee who have suffered an injury that has resulted in an inability to work need to understand how the Social Security Administration defines and assesses certain issues when the person applies for Social Security disability benefits. It is these federal requirements and the failure to fully grasp how they work that can frequently lead to a denied claim of Social Security disability benefits for injury when providing the proper information could have led to an approval.

One example when it comes to musculoskeletal conditions is the applicant's ability to ambulate effectively. There are certain criteria that must be in place for the benefits to be provided if a person is having trouble getting from place to place by walking. With effective ambulation, the person must have the ability to sustain a reasonable walking speed for an acceptable distance to be able to function on a daily basis. This includes traveling by him or herself sans assistance when going to work or school. If the person cannot do these basic activities, they can pursue SSD benefits based on that.

Examples that are considered ineffective ambulation can include the following: not being able to walk without a walker; needing to use crutches or canes; having the inability to walk a block at what is deemed to be a reasonable rate on uneven or graded surfaces; not being able to use public transportation; having issues performing routine activities that include ambulation like shopping and going to the bank; and not being able to climb steps at a reasonable speed without having to hold onto a handrail.

By itself, being able to walk without assistance in their home without using anything for assistance will not result in the assessment that the person can ambulate effectively on their own. When a person has suffered an injury that prevents him or her from being able to move from one place to another in a reasonable manner, it is possible to seek SSDI benefits. Discussing the matter with an attorney can help with making this determination and moving forward with a claim for SSD benefits.
