VA cuts back opioid prescriptions, TN veterans file complaints

Tennessee veterans were in for a surprise when the VA sent out a letter concerning opioid prescriptions. Opioids are most commonly used to treat severe pain, chronic pain among other uses. However, they can have unwanted side effects and can be addictive, among other downsides.

Military veterans often have pain associated with tasks or incidents that occurred during active duty. They could be war-related injuries, exposure injuries or injuries that have compounded from over-use of their body. The letter sent out by the VA notified veterans of their intent to decrease the use of opioid prescriptions as a method of pain treatment.

Some veterans feel that this overall ban is over-encompassing and many feel that the ban is detrimental in treating their chronic or severe pain due to war-related injuries. According to the VA, the reason for the decrease is due to a variety of factors related to the downsides of opioid use. However, it is certainly true that opioid use is a personal issue that affects users differently based on a variety of factors including their level of opioid use, their pain threshold and other factors.

The VA is solely responsible for doling out veterans' benefits like healthcare after a service man or woman has served their country. Some several hundred complaints by TN veterans claim that the VA is not taking good care of their patients by tightening the prescriptions on opioids. The VA has long been accused of not taking proper care of veterans.
